"Started in business June 19, 1890 in Louser building," Pierce H. Thompson wrote on the first page of his ledger. Keeping meticulous notes on his business, he also noted when he purchased his new hearse (March 22, 1892) and when he took delivery on a new ambulance in 1894. On September 27, 1904, he purchased a horse from Harry Light. "His name will be George," he wrote.
Thompson operated both a funeral home and a furniture store, not uncommon in those days since cabinet makers also made wooden caskets. Pierce died at his home in 1922. Pierce's sons continued the business, and in 1924, Andrew P. Thompson, became licensed as an undertaker. John P. Thompson, son of Andrew, began working with his father and uncles in 1956. After earning his business degree and graduating from Eckel's School of Embalming, John became a licensed funeral director in 1957. Andrew died in 1959 and John purchased the business from his Uncle Herman’s estate in 1975.
Today, John's son, Stephen P. Thompson, is proud to be the fourth generation of the Thompson family to continue the legacy of their family owned and operated funeral home.
